New technologies are always on their way to us, their consumers, but the most amazing thing is that we can never know or guess what this new technology or implementation will be like.
This time the new thing is based on an already existing technology which was being developed for some years now – OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). The new thing in this case is the fact that the OLED displays were made in such a way, that they are absolutely invisible in the dark. This way this technology has made its claim to be widely used mainly in the armed forces.
A group of scientists from the South California University have created a specifically new development based on the already existing OLED displays. This new display should be visible in the dark only with the help of special equipment. The invisibility of such devices is reached due to colored molecules, which are able emitting near infrared specter. This specter cannot be seen by human eye, yet it will be perfectly seen when using night-vision goggles.
This development should enhance the communication ability of special forces during their operations, thus making the visualization level much higher. Moreover, organic polymers can be also used with curved surfaces. This way such a display could be easily mounted onto different surfaces such as helmets.
It is obvious that the usage of nightly invisible OLED display is quite advantageous for the military sector of any country, so the possibility of its usage in the civil sector is still rather vague.
