Will powerline home networking finally sizzle at CES?

With iPod- and MP3-enabled home networked audio systems now launched by multiple vendors, and a major test by DirecTV reportedly set for early in 2008, will networking on powerlines actually start to shine at this year's CES?

With CES just a few short weeks away now, people are giving more thought to what trends we'll see. Some say that powerline -- a type of network that runs across inexpensive electrical wiring instead of cable, fiber or copper -- is finally starting to set off sparks right now.

Veracode pitches backdoor apps security

Veracode launched a new version of its binary code analysis service on Monday that focuses specifically on helping software engineers find potential backdoor vulnerabilities in their programs.

While some applications security companies scour source code for flaws, such as Fortify, and others specialize in testing programs already running in production, such as Cenzic, Veracode is spinning itself as an alternative by channeling its efforts into looking for vulnerabilities in binary code and offering the capabilities as a fully-hosted service.

Security Software Tracks BlackBerry Communications

Gwava, the developer of security software, plans to introduce today a product that lets enterprises easily track and find text messages and phone calls that BlackBerry users send and receive.

The software should appeal to enterprises that need to comply with regulations that require them to track employee communications. Key to the Retain for BlackBerry Enterprise Server is that it doesn't require any client software. That means an IT administrator can manage it fully from the back end.

Dutch Government Plans to Promote Use of Open-Source Software

The Dutch government has set a soft deadline of April 2008 for its agencies to start using open-source software -- freely distributed programs that anyone can modify -- the Netherlands Economic Affairs Ministry said Thursday.

Peach an open 3D animation movie project

As a follow-up to the successful project Orange’s “Elephants Dream”, the Blender Foundation will initiate another open movie project. Again a small team of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community will be invited to come together to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 until April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie. The team members will get a great studio facility and housing in Amsterdam, all travel costs reimbursed, and a fee sufficient to cover all expenses during the period.

Microsoft Makes Windows Embrace Linux

When it comes down to identity management, the Windows and Linux operating systems fail to play by the same tune. But at the same time, Windows Server can be leveraged in order to manage both platforms. This is the promise of a whitepaper authored by Chris Travers, the owner of Metatron Technology Consulting and Contributing Author to the Microsoft Open Source Software Lab. Travers revealed that Windows Server 2003 R2 was effectively a turning point for the streamlining of the implementation Windows-based identity management solutions tailored for Linux.
